A recent ransomware attack has had sweeping impacts on various Hamilton city services over the past week.
Affected services include city phone lines, the bus schedule app, library WiFi, computerized aids for city workers, and permit applications. CBC Hamilton spoke to four cybersecurity experts, including Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship Academic Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Media Arts Andrea Zeffiro, about the severity of ransomware attacks and their potentially detrimental impact on the city of Hamilton.
“The ways attacks are carried out are constantly changing,” Zeffiro said. “These groups are adapting their tactics in response to security measures and even organizations with really good data security are susceptible.”
