How has technology transformed the way we communicate with one another, tell stories about ourselves, and share knowledge both within and beyond our communities? With the rise of digital publishing, digital storytelling has undergone a kind of renaissance. Unlike traditional means of knowledge production and dissemination, digital storytelling—due in part to the malleable nature of electronic publishing and platforms—prioritizes perspectives underrepresented in many forms of academic scholarship, and was conceived as a “response to the exclusion of ‘ordinary’ people’s voices in traditional media” (Burgess et al). In other words, emerging forms of technology change the way knowledge is preserved, as well as what ‘counts’ as knowledge in the first place. In this project-based course, students will have the opportunity to explore different modes of digital storytelling—including digital archives, podcasting, short form video, and interactive storytelling—and, in doing so, consider the social and ethical implications of digital domains of knowledge. No previous experience with media production is expected or required.
