Meet Our Team: Humayun Kabir, Data Analysis Support Assistant

Meet Humayun Kabi, a Data Analysis Support Assistant with the Data Analysis Support Hub (DASH) at McMaster University Library!

Please introduce yourself to our readers!

Hi, I am Humayun Kabir. I am currently working as a Data Analysis Support Assistant with the Data Analysis Support Hub (DASH) at McMaster University Library. I am also a second-year Master of Science student in Health Research Methodology with a major in Clinical Epidemiology in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University.

My academic journey encompasses a Master of Public Health with a major in Epidemiology from North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and a Bachelor in Nursing from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh. I have the skills and expertise in health data analysis for my consultancy at DASH, particularly in the field of quantitative research.

Over the past four years, I have been immensely exposed to epidemiological research, resulting in the publication of more than 25 articles. My proficiency extends to conducting in-depth epidemiological studies, statistical modelling, and managing large datasets. I have skills in using diverse software tools, such as R, STATA, and SPSS, for data analysis.

Tell us about your role at DASH.

As a Data Analysis Support Assistant with DASH, I am offering consultations on Health Research Methods, R, STATA, and SPSS to researchers with data analysis issues in their projects. The DASH program is available to any students, staff, and faculty members from any discipline at McMaster with queries about data analytics and software programming. My role also includes leading workshops in data analysis and the use of statistical packages in R.

What are you currently working on at DASH? What are you looking forward to?

DASH is a great platform to meet with researchers, students, and faculties and assist in their data analysis. Along with consultation, I will offer numerous workshops. Join me in the Winter semester for online workshops on Hypothesis Test, Univariate, and Bivariate Analysis with R, Multivariable Analysis with R, and Survival Analysis with R. I also work on developing the data analysis resources sections of the DASH that help researchers get hands-on experience while exploring the materials.

What’s your favourite way to use digital tools? You might think about software, social media platforms, or something else.

My preferred strategy for using digital resources in my work involves looking into the constantly shifting timeframe of digital tool development. In this digital age, I feel that utilizing these new tools is essential for advancement. I value the views and assistance of experienced friends and colleagues who have helped me enhance my ability to use these digital tools to their fullest potential. When an issue arises, I often look to open-source resources to find a better solution.

What do you want the world to know about DASH?

DASH is a great team with a wide range of skills in quantitative analysis, from data analysis to data visualization and statistical analysis to machine learning. I wholeheartedly encourage exploring the resources and attending workshops that fit with their interests within this broad and diverse range of expertise for early-career researchers hoping to improve their quantitative analysis skills.

We conclude all entries in the “Meet Our Team” interview series by asking for a fun fact. Tell us something interesting or unexpected about you–your favorite TV show, a little-known hobby, a great recipe–whatever you like.

When I am not deep in my studies, I like spending time peer-reviewing for journals or writing academic papers. I am a huge cricket fan, and I pay attention to the score during games. I am also a cyclist, finding joy and relaxation in exploring the world on two wheels. I like movies or dramas and enjoy watching the latest releases.
